CIGE is a judicial institution established by the Judicial Council of Kurdistan to investigate acts committed by ISIS against ethno-religious minorities in the Sinjar region and Ninevah Plains or that originated from 10 June 2014 that may amount to genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes under international law. With the powers of an investigative court, CIGE has the authority to investigate crimes, gather and analyse evidence, prepare reports and case files that can be used in legal proceedings, facilitate third-state investigations and cooperate with international accountability mechanisms. CIGE is guided by principles of justice and accountability and is committed to upholding the rights of victims, supporting fair, independent, and impartial criminal proceedings in adherence with international law.
