Many people are still missing as a result of ISIS, and their whereabouts are unknown by their families or friends. They may have been abducted, disappeared, killed or displaced by ISIS. CIGE works closely with other government agencies and civil society organisations to locate and identify these missing persons. This includes locating and exhuming graves, handling human remains and personal items with care, and storing and returning them with dignity. Forensic methods such as DNA testing help to match human remains with existing records and aid in identification of missing persons.
CIGE interviews family members of missing persons to develop detailed case files on missing persons, including biographical information about the individual(s) and their families and collects blood samples from relevant family members. This information, combined with information from other sources, such as pre-mortem data, helps to create detailed and consolidated profiles that can be used to identify the missing individuals and locate them or their remains. CIGE keeps in contact with the families of the missing, providing regular updates and involving them in the identification process as appropriate.
